Program Overview
The Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery residency at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is a fully ACGME-accredited five-year comprehensive training program that consists of three residents per year. In addition to our excellent surgical training, we pride ourselves on our collegial environment and strong resident camaraderie.
During the PGY-1 year, interns spend 6 months on the Otolaryngology service to include 4 months at Georgetown University Hospital and 2 months at Washington Hospital Center. During the remaining 6 months, interns rotate through Trauma Surgery, General Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Anesthesia, Radiology, and the Surgical ICU.
The PGY-2 through PGY-5 years are divided among MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, MedStar Washington Hospital Center, the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Children’s National Medical Center. In addition, there is a 4-month dedicated research block during the PGY-3 year, and all residents are expected to complete an annual research project.
Residents average around 1,800 cases by the end of their residency. During their time here, residents are exposed to the full breadth of Otolaryngology, as all subspecialties of ENT are very well-represented among our faculty. Approximately 2/3 of all residents have gone on to complete fellowship training; however, our graduates are also very well-prepared to enter private practice following residency training. Approximately half of our graduates have pursued academic careers. Fellowship placements are available for review.
The MedStar Hospital system provides access to simulation lab training through a simulation (SiTEL) facility. Our program holds several simulation-based trainings and hands-on didactic sessions for our residents annually. One such training includes an Otolaryngology Emergencies Boot Camp that was developed by our Program Director, Dr. Malekzadeh, and is attended by residents all over the country.
